In the fictional town of Titipu there is great excitement, as the first International Arts Festival and Summer School is about to take place. There are also preparations underway for a wedding, but it’s not entirely clear who the groom will be. Nanki-Poo, a wandering minstrel, has followed Yum-Yum, the girl of his dreams, to the town, but has yet to find her. She and her friends are just about to return to Titipu having finished school for good! Meanwhile, the status of Titipu has been enhanced by the appointment of Ko-Ko to the position of Lord High Executioner. He has accepted the role on the (mistaken) assumption that the duties are “purely nominal”.
The Mikado is one of the best-loved of the Gilbert & Sullivan musicals, and includes well-known songs such as Three Little Maids from School, A more Humane Mikado (“let the punishment fit the crime”) and the often parodied patter song I’ve got a Little List. With the usual cast of larger than life characters, and a mix of romance, pathos and comedy, this is a show which can be enjoyed by most ages.
Will Nanki-Poo get his girl? Will Titipu keep its town status if Ko-Ko refuses to carry out his duties? Will the Mikado get involved with the happenings in this small town? To find the answers to these and other questions, come along to the Glebe School to one of the four performances: Thursday 29th February to Saturday 2nd March 2024 at 7.30pm, or 2.30pm on the 2nd.
